Freedom 1886-1927 Archive

To mark the 140th anniversary of the first issue of Freedom, pdf scans of all issues of the newspaper published between October 1886 and November-December 1927 are now available on-line:

Co-founded by Peter Kropotkin and Charlotte Wilson, Freedom was the leading – and often only – anarchist newspaper in Britain. It was usually monthly but had its gaps and joint-month issues resulting in 448 issues in total.

In addition to this archive, the next two issues of Black Flag Anarchist Review will reprint articles from Freedom – the first (Volume 6, No. 3) will cover 1886 to 1907, the second (Volume 7, No. 1) 1908-1927:

Freedom’s contributors included most of leading anarchists of the period: Peter Kropotkin, Charlotte Wilson, Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman Rudolf Rocker, Errico Malatesta, Voltarine de Cleyre, Max Nettlau, John Turner, Louisa Sarah Bevington, Warlaam Tcherkesoff, George Barrett, amongst others. Its covered numerous significant events of the time, including: New Unionism, the London Dock Strike of 1889, the Boer Wars, the 1905 Russian Revolution, the rise of syndicalism, the Great Unrest of 1910-1914, the First World War, the Russian Revolutions of 1917, the degeneration of the Russian Revolution, General Strike of 1926, amongst others.

Given this, it is a rich source of writings by anarchist activists and thinkers about the issues and movements they and the movement they were part of faced. As such, Freedom is more than of interest to historians, it is of use to modern-day activists who face similar issues – not least, challenging and ending capitalism – and can draw upon their ideas and activities to aid current struggles.
